Jonathan talks to us about bullying and harrassment as well as other psychosocial hazards in the workplace, his career and his own personal experience dealing with a toxic workplace environment. During that time, he has witnessed a variety of leadership styles and has seen the organisational culture of the police change dramatically. He has a good understanding of how important a healthy positive culture is to the morale of employees. He has challenged inconsistencies between leadership behaviour and policy when necessary. Jonathan experienced being the target of bullying some years ago; a period of his life that impacted on him considerably. He now dedicates much of his time to challenging workplace bullying and is an Ambassador for the Stop Hurt at Work campaign. If you want a quick link try these: https://buff.ly/3Arrmq9 or watch at https://buff.ly/3AeAEG Rob is the Organisational Performance Manager for Energyworks in Taranaki and has spent the last 30 years working in a number of high-risk industries including oil and gas, electricity, adventure tourism, transportation and waste. Rob has also held a number of health, safety and environmental roles, however over the last 10 years, Rob has watched the ‘safety industry’ go from non-existent in some sectors to a bureaucratic burden in others with layers of administration that add little value. Despondent with corporate zero harm fallacies, tracking metrics and low trust leadership models, Rob sought out a new way of ‘doing’ safety and the results speak for themselves but in doing so has realised that this has very little to do with safety. Energyworks also won the inaugural Safety II category at the National Health and Safety awards last year and as a result have been instrumental in taking the lead in removing health and safety from the vocabulary. Rob believes that every person can undertake growth personally and professionally in the right environment. Rob’s approach revolves around the principle that workers are not the problem but the solution so we need to ensure our people are at the core of decision making. Andrea Paynter

This week on the conversation we are joined by the amazing Andrea Paynter. A wide ranging discussion on safety topics, legislation, and business. Andrea is an experienced and qualified consultant, supporting businesses to improve work health and safety (WHS) legal compliance, management system documentation, strategic planning, risk management, audit, and assisting with workplace investigations. She has developed significant experience in these areas over the past 20 years, including having worked as an Associate Solicitor practising in personal injury law in Queensland, various WHS management roles in large organisations in the private sector, in the public sector as a national WHS manager for a federal government organisation and in local government WHS, and with an array of businesses as a management consultant and licenced factual investigator. Andrea's diverse industry experience includes supply chain warehousing and logistics, food services, manufacturing, road surfacing, quarries, construction, arboriculture, retail, not-for-profit, heavy vehicle safety regulatory compliance, legal services and policing. Drawing on her qualifications and experience, Andrea recently established Brisbane-based Organisational Risk Consulting, which provides tailored risk management support and specialises in WHS legal compliance and best practice solutions. Lisette Kanse

On this weeks episode of the Conversation we are joined by the wornderful Lisette Kanse. Lisette talks about her journey in safety, the AIHS Body of Knowledge and all things safety. Dr Lisette Kanse is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Psychological Science at the University of Western Australia (UWA) and the Course Coordinator of UWA’s Master of and Graduate Certificate in Business Psychology. She has worked as an academic and as a consultant/practitioner in a variety of industrial settings across Europe and Australia, including chemical industry, oil and gas, mining, rail transport, and healthcare settings. Having entered the field of work health and safety over 25 years ago convinced of the importance of this domain, Lisette’s mission across her entire working life has been to improve work environments, either directly, or through her students, to keep people safe, healthy, engaged, and productive. Occasionally she has been known to extend this mission to keeping people safe outside of the work environment as well. She uses her dual background in industrial engineering and organisational psychology to identify and facilitate evidence-based improvements, and to warn against ineffective strategies.
